Abstract
Burmese ‘new women’ in visual culture and political debate, 1885 to 1955
This paper examines the long period of circulation of depictions and descriptions of Burmese women, spanning the period of British colonial rule to the early years of nationalist independent rule. I explore the meanings projected onto Burmese women’s use of makeup and their habits of smoking, alongside the organisation of marital and economic life. I argue that the idea of the ‘new woman’ gave relatively little agency to Burmese women in attaining cultural capital or political freedoms; but that nonetheless, ‘the Burmese new woman’ had considerable power in the comparative global debates about women’s status and freedoms.

Abstract
Rethinking feminism through global history
Earlier phases of feminist history had a distinctly European and Anglo-American world view. This paper examines the literature that has emerged since the rise of global and transnational history, and reviews the impact this has had on the historicisation of feminist ideas and women’s movement. It also draws on new work in material culture and the history of emotions in reshaping the history of feminism in innovative new ways.’
